Contextualization

Contextualization. It's a big word. Bottom line, it means we are about doing whatever it takes to bring the gospel of Jesus to college students. You walk into a high school cafeteria and you quickly realize groups of students exist. It's not one big student body where everyone knows everyone. Jocks, geeks, skaters, band nerds, they all exist. Yeah, I know, extreme stereotypes. But the point is people naturally run in groups.

It's no different on the college campus. One in every three student is an ethnic minority student. In fact, by the year 2050, it is projected that one in two will be an ethnic student. The gospel is a powerful message of hope, joy, freedom, and love. We have to figure out how to communicate that message in ways to which students can respond.

When I was student, I was one of a handful of Asian American students involved with Campus Crusade. Every Thursday, after the meeting, an announcement would be made, "We're going to the Broken Spoke." I remember thinking, why in the world would I want to go country western dancing. Not my cup of tea. I've had African American friends, and Latino friends who have had similar experiences. They have felt like they had to "check their culture at the door" in order to attend a predominately white student meeting to learn about God. The music we listen to, the style of teaching we enjoy, even how we pray is dramatically different from culture to culture. We cannot ask students to check their culture at the door, so to speak. We cannot ask them to deny the very culture that God has created them to be.

Contextualization is not about segregation. It is not about creating diversity and working against unity. It is about reconciliation. But not in the sense of becoming a homogenous "one". It is about reconciliation through creating unity through understanding diversity. Campus Crusade is partnered with organizations to do just that.
